Springcon 2013 Adventure

We had a great time at the 25th annual Springcon comicbook convention! Thank you to the volunteers at the Midwest Comic Book Association for producing the event. They took great care of us.

According to the comics missing from my storage boxes we connected with around 400 people. Woohoo! We were giving away free comics to raise awareness about our new book, and happy to do so. Thank you to all who stopped by to chat with us. Stay connected through the web site because we will be serving up more great stories as promised.

Here are a few photos of us in action at our table.

Everett Paul Burris on the left and Scott A. Snyder on the right with our hard cover, hand crafted version of the comic. A couple of people asked Scott to sign their Batman comic books but he had to turn them down. The popular Scott Snyder who writes for DC comics is not the same person as our Scott A. Snyder. However, we love Batman too.

There is Scott A. Snyder on the left and Jose Moreno on the right. Jose is an aspiring manga artist who came along for comic relief. Mission accomplished.

The Spiritman cover was featured in a gallery exhibition in Saint Cloud, Minnesota just a few days before the convention. We had to smuggle it out for the weekend. While at Springcon it was especially fun to see people's eyes pop wide open when they saw this unique work of art. 18" wide by 24" high, the art is carved out of layered oak panels and painted with acrylic paints.

However, the convention experience did not stop there. After wide open eyes we were treated with vocal expressions like "wow" and "cool" when the cover was opened to reveal the pages that are inside. More than cover art, this is a full blown comic book, with metal hinges. The comic art inside was sewn together on high quality paper. It was a very physical and tactile experience for people.

As new art is created it will be added to the book. So keep in touch and we will let you know where the book will appear next.

About the Creators

Twenty five years ago I, Everett Paul Burris, was invited by a fellow named Scott A Snyder to join him in creating a faith based comic book character called Spiritman. We both loved comics and loved God, so it was a natural fit. Scott was a writer and I was an illustrator. Since then we have both moved on to explore new territory but two things did not change... we love comics and we love God. About a year ago I began to think about how our skills have advanced tremendously and how we have a greater capacity than before to bring a vision of a faith based comic book into reality. I called Scott. After a bit of catching up I got to the point and asked, “Why are we not making Spiritman?” We could not answer but thought it would be fun to try again.

The Spiritman art emerged as a meditiation on two passages of scripture.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Ephesians 6:10 - 12

“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.”

Isaiah 11:1
